Job Summary

The Chief Data Architect for ExxonMobil will be the most senior data architect role in ExxonMobil and report to the head of the Central Data Office. This individual will lead a team of approximately 40 enterprise data architects and should be an expert in data models, analysis, design, deploying and management of enterprise’s data products. This position will be an advisor, leader, educator, and mentor to other data professionals on these items. The Chief Data Architect will be responsible to define and steward data architecture standards, practices and processes across ExxonMobil.

The Chief Data Architect will work closely with ExxonMobil’s Chief Technology and Chief Applications architects to ensure an aligned overall architecture between the business, data, applications, and technology.

The role will be located at the ExxonMobil Campus in Spring, Texas

Primary Job Functions

  • Accountable for developing and maintaining a formal description of the enterprise data and data structures using conceptual, logical, and physical data models
  • Analyze industry trends and emerging open or industry related data standards and models
  • Define, document, & manage the business requirements on how key enterprise data will be stored, consumed (abstraction layer), integrated and managed across the enterprise by different business applications, IT systems, and Users through data flow diagrams and CRUD analysis
  • Align the data professional communities on adopting and migrating data products to align to the data architecture strategy
  • Provide coaching to grow the internal bench strength within ExxonMobil and develop our future data leaders
  • Applies architectural and technology concepts to address scalability, security, reliability, maintainability and sharing of enterprise data
  • Define and manage standards, guidelines, principles, and processes around data architecture, data governance, data management, etc.
  • Ensure technology solutions/major project implementation plans are in alignment with data architecture principles and the overall Enterprise Architecture
  • Provides architectural leadership, guidance, consulting, mentoring, education and support to other data architects, data professionals and projects
  • Partner and participate with business leads/data governance organizations to support business data goals and needs
  • Guide the data model design and development of major cross-functional projects / initiatives
  • Creates and enforces data-specific guidelines, standards, policies and procedures
  • Partner with the IT data support organization to successfully deploy and continuously improve the data tools & technologies that are deployed across the corporation
  • Stay informed of emerging technologies for data architecture and data management

Skills / Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of designing enterprise level data models based upon business process models
  • Experience using modern data platforms, cloud at scale, and ERPs to provision data products
  • Strong understanding of database technologies (NoSQL, Relational, etc.), Data Governance/Master Data Management/Metadata Management, large data structure technologies
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience leveraging analytics to improve data quality and to deliver business value through new solutions
  • Intermediate knowledge of the TOGAF Framework, SAFE agile practices, and DAMA DMBoK
  • Intermediate knowledge of Information Security and Data Ethics
  • Organizationally savvy, able to influence without authority, & highly collaborative

Education / Experience

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in business, computer science, engineering, system analysis or a related STEM field
  • Experience driving data architectural transformation in a large multinational company
  • Experience implementing data products that span multiple business lines or functions within a corporation
  • Experience designing and implementing data strategies
  • Work experience with data products related to domains such as Supply Chain, Sales & Marketing, Financial, and Operations
  • Practical experience leveraging the cloud, data platforms, and SAP systems
