Position Summary: The Safety and Security Engineer is responsible for Safety-related and Cyber-Security-related coordination for the ePowertrain and Transmission programs of ZF in North America for Commercial Vehicles. Is the customer-facing expert for drivetrain application projects. Is the primary interface between the OEM customer Safety/Cyber-Security experts, the tandem ZF experts, and the ZF Product Safety & Regulatory Compliance experts who interface directly with the federal government and industry associations.
Position Responsibilities:
- Customer Interface on Functional-Safety & Cyber-Security: direct contact with our N.American customer experts for all topics related to these topics and our powertrain products. Travel to customer locations as needed for coordination on testing, program reviews, and general meetings/activities related these topics.
- Federal, State, and Local Regulatory Requirements Review: must be aware of all powertrain-related requirements (for Functional-Safety and Cyber-Security) with respect to ePowertrains and Transmissions. Must be able to summarize and communicate those requirements to our applications department, and other ZF organizations that we interface with.
- Coordinate Functional-Safety & Cyber-Security Testing in N.America: manage the testing activities for our ePowertrain and Transmission projects (e.g. powertrain dyno testing, vehicle testing internal/external)
- Coordinate with ZF Functional-Safety & Cyber-Security testing experts Globally: work closely with teams from global ZF testing locations to align on testing procedures/reporting to satisfy the requirements of the local region.
- Coordinate with ZF Safety and Cyber-Security Regulatory Compliance experts: work closely with ZF organization that interface directly with the federal government and industry associations. Be able to guide the engagement of those organizations. Be an advocate of ZF and ZF products.
- Participate in Industrial organizations: represent ZF powertrain engineering at conferences and organizations (e.q. SAE, HDMA, etc), and obtain membership as needed. Present papers as needed.
- Benchmarking all competitive Products related to Functional-Safety & Cyber-Security: this position will be responsible for benchmarking of competitive products for these specific topics. This includes travel to conferences and shows, providing reports to all relevant ZF groups, acquiring and testing products in N.America, and supporting testing & evaluations in central ZF R&D locations.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical, Computer/Software, or related field)
- 5+ years engineering experience in applicable fields, such as driveline development, production, or quality.
- Product familiarity required: ePowertrains, conventional Transmissions, Torque Converters.
- Familiar with Functional Safety (e.g. ISO26262), EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility), Cyber-Security Testing as related to powertrains.
- Ability to develop and convey complex technical solutions to OEM customers.
- Ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel/management.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to work independently manage multiple responsibilities (i.e. self-starter, self-motivated).
- Proficient with Microsoft Office software.
- English language – same level of proficiency as native-speaker.
- Ability/willingness to travel (average 25%).
Preferred Skills and experience:
- Master’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical, Computer/Software, or related field)
- 5+ years of experience in transmission engineering. Direct experience with OEM customer sales and/or engineering.
- Solid knowledge of Class 3-8 N.American OEMs, their products, and the technical requirements specific to N.America.
- Familiarity with transmission components and the technical characteristics of Powertrains (Engine to tires).
- Familiarity with transmission park lock system, ePowertrain/Transmission controls system and software functions and features.
- Familiar with Federal, State, and Local Regulatory Requirements as related to powertrain Functional Safety, EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility), Cyber-Security.
- Customer-facing experience.
- Experience with benchmarking activities.
- Experience with N.American Class 3-8 Engines a plus.
- Experience with data acquisition tools (e.g. ETAS INCA, CANalyzer, etc.).
