POSITION OVERVIEW

The Senior Control Systems Specialist leads successful systems integration / systems engineering related activities and coordinates with managers or other engineers at peer / junior level engineers. The position is expected to operate with minimum supervision, working with a team of engineers or the third-party engineering contractors, and to provide mentorship to the mid-level and the entry-level engineers as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a Senior Control Systems Specialist in the conceptual, preliminary and final design for complex rail transit projects. Responsibilities include:
    • Work with a team in providing systems oversight for rail transit projects involving control centers, signaling and train control equipment, SCADA Networks, miscellaneous communications systems such as PLC’s, Network Switches etc., public address equipment, voice and data communication, telephones, fiber optic, CCTV, security alarm, fire detection and suppression, computer systems, and systems integration testing and startup activities.
    • Responsible for providing technical direction, and assuring the accuracy of the work produced by the design team and contractors, including plans, specifications, and estimates.
    • Witness factory and field testing of systems equipment.
    • Responsible for interfacing with the other disciplines to ensure proper coordination of the systems aspects of the project.
    • Ensures compliance of design with all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Interface with the Project Manager to determine schedules and monitor design progress.
    • Helps determine budget estimates and staffing requirements for the defined scope and schedule.
    • Develop Systems Integration and Interface Management Plans
    • Development & oversight of Key Project Indicators (KPI) tracking covering requirements management, change management, quality, and delivery.
    • Responsible for providing direction and assuring the accuracy of the work produced by the design team and contractors, including plans, specifications, and estimates.
    • Manage the project technical risks and the corresponding mitigation plan
    • Responsible for interfacing with the other disciplines to ensure proper coordination of the systems aspects of the project.
    • Ensures compliance of design with all applicable codes and regulations
  • Understanding of construction means and methods
    • Knowledge of the principles of traction power and signaling systems. In addition, knowledge of communications and central control facilities is desirable.
    • Familiarity with rail transit industry standards, practices, and regulations is required.
  • Experience in design and/or construction management of rail transit systems such as traction power substations, third rail and/or overhead contact systems, signals/train control, and communications is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

  •  8 + years of progressive work experience and thorough understanding of the following, but not limited to;
  • Rail & Transit system design, construction, testing and commissioning
  • Understanding and experience in Requirements Management
  • Demonstrable understanding of the application System Safety Certification processes and RAMS
  • Knowledgeable in railway standards such as AREMA, MIL-STD, IEEE and EN
  • Demonstrable understanding of the application of Systems and Safety
  • Engineering Concepts, including Design, Verification & Validation, and System
  • Basic to intermediate understanding of other subsystems such as communications, supervisory control/ SCADA, traction power, tunnel ventilation, on-board, and auxiliary electrical systems
  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of on-board/ wayside interface
  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of train control technologies such as Automatic Train Control (ATC), Positive Train Control (PTC), and Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC)Systems integration
  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical, electronics or software engineering OR 8 – 10 years equivalent work experience with a 4 year non-technical degree
  • Membership with active participation to professional organizations such as AREMA or APTA is desirable.
  • Ability to travel as business requires
