The City of Virginia Beach, Information Technology Department is seeking a Systems Engineer II to join our IT Infrastructure Team. The qualified candidate will be a part of a small, agile Network Services team that provides on-site support for the City’s departments in both a campus and WAN environments. Support staff are ALPHA I (essential) status and provide 24×7 service operations to all the Cities Departments. Advanced troubleshooting, capacity planning, and QoS implementation experience is required.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, test, install, and implement network solutions to support requirements for routing protocols, policy-based routing, traffic shaping, border gateway protocols, tunneling, IP Security, network address translations, and network security. (required)
  • Strong Cisco Equipment & Configuration Experience – IOS, IOS-XE and NX-OS on Cisco 9000 series equipment. (required)
  • Experience with Cisco Industrial routers & switches.
  • Experience with LTE and 5G cellular environments.
  • Knowledge of Cisco platforms including ISE & Cisco Catalyst (formerly DNA).
  • Troubleshoot and proactively monitor current system health using tools such as SolarWinds and Cisco Catalyst.
  • Knowledge and experience with MPLS, OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, VRF, VLANs & IPSEC.
  • Designing and building networks to ensure connectivity across various devices and systems in a Campus, MAN, WAN or VPN environment.
  • Optimizing network performance through analysis and implementation of new solutions.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving issues with hardware, software, and networking systems.
  • Implementing security measures to protect data and manage encryption and other security protocols.
  • Maintaining network equipment, including updates and replacements as needed.
  • Providing technical support and training to coworkers.
  • Documenting network operations through technical documentation and diagrams (Visio).
  • Knowledge of fiber optics including modules, various SFP types, Multi-mode and Single mode fiber type and connectors.

Preferred Candidate Will Possess Skills In The Following Areas

  • Cisco and Palo Alto Firewall Experience
  • Azure and AWS experience
  • VMWare NSX

This position offers a remote/hybrid work schedule arrangement within the Virginia and North Carolina surrounding areas.
