Overview

PURPOSE: The Berry Global Corporate network team is responsible for deploying and supporting global network operations for a highly reliable, broad reaching, scalable and high performing network. The wireless network engineer assigned to the team will implement, manage, and optimize the wireless local area networks (WLAN) and other wireless technologies. This role will participate as a member of the network team, and will assume the lead on the design and feature enhancements to keep our global WLAN systems running smoothly. The engineer in this role will help define technology standards and policies for our global wireless infrastructure. In this role, the engineer will work with our WAN/LAN wired network design engineers, infrastructure operations, software team and automation teams. The person in this role will also ensure that WLAN network operations are safe and efficient by monitoring network performance, coordinating planned maintenance, adjusting hardware components and responding to WLAN network connectivity issues. The continual growth of our network creates ongoing challenges and opportunities and defines the need to be innovative with evolving WLAN architectures and technologies. The person in this role will fill the role as an expert trusted advisor for our teams, customers, and external vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, plan, deploy, and improve wireless networks from concept to implementation by collaborating with employees, vendors, managers, and network engineers.
  • Provide primary support for all network communication equipment with an emphasis on wireless equipment.
  • Configure, implement, maintain and monitor WAN/LAN/WiFi equipment and related services.
  • Optimize wireless network performance by monitoring performance, addressing network issues, and collaborating with network engineers.
  • Develop and recommend solutions to enhance system performance and stability.
  • Program and install wireless products from HPE-Aruba, Cisco and others as required.
  • Maintain wireless equipment and perform system upgrades including code and hardware upgrades and equipment moves.
  • Implement and manage rouge detection and containment as well as other recommended security requirements.
  • Build out and manage centralized management platforms adding sites and equipment.
  • Establish and manage monitoring, alerting, and visual dashboards.
  • Fine-tune existing wireless networks by adjusting RF settings, Client Matching, band steering and adjusting/changing areas of the network to provide optimal wireless solutions to the end-user population
  • Monitor network usage to identify short and long-term trends to identify issues and suggest solutions for improvements to the network infrastructure.
  • Analyze existing architecture and implementation and make recommendations and changes needed to support VOIP and other real time applications.
  • Ensure all network related equipment complies with industry standards.
  • Undertake routine preventative measures.
  • Recommend, develop and implement best practices.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all implemented networks.
  • Provide technical support for employees with varying levels of IT knowledge and competence.
  • Provide assistance, training, and knowledge transfer to other IT members.
  • Available to respond to emergencies involving network systems, equipment or services.
  • Travel to various facilities for deployment of network equipment.
  • Accept special projects as may be requested.
  • Provide after hours on call support as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor-level computer engineering, computer science degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Certifications such as the Aruba Certified Mobility Professional, Cisco CCNP Wireless or similar WLAN certifications or experience are a plus.
  • Other industry leading network certifications desirable.
  • 5+ years of experience with Aruba and Cisco WLAN infrastructure in large-scale global deployments.
  • 5+ years of experience with 802.1x, RADIUS, EAP-TLS WLAN standards.
  • 5+ years of experience with TCP/IP internals and the ability to analyze packet captures.
  • 3+ years of experience with LAN/WAN technologies, MPLS, IPsec, VPN, BGP and OSPF RF Design, RF Survey/Engineering and RF troubleshooting skills.
  • Thorough understanding of wireless authentication, security and network management.
  • Experience designing and deploying key wireless applications including mobility, VOIP, location-based services, and guest wireless.
  • Ability to use tools to generate heat maps to provide optimal AP placement to produce wireless signal coverage and meet client requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in utilizing industry standard network management tools such as Solarwinds, Airwave Management Platform, and Aruba Clarity.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced and sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Knowledge of Cisco and Aruba routing and switching is required to perform this position
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills with network related services.
  • Strong organizational skills with proven ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Experience with evaluation, selection and recommendation of network components and services.
  • Strong project leadership experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift, carry and move all components of network equipment.
  • Ability to travel 25-35% of the time.
