The Controls Engineer reports to Technical Leadership and whose focus is performing design and support of low to moderate complexity controls systems and equipment. This position requires a moderate level of supervision; complex work is still reviewed by a more senior engineer. In addition, this level may participate in project-specific relationship building with Customers, Suppliers, individuals or organizations.
What you will be doing
- Works assigned tasks to meet schedule and may coordinate details with other departments
- Recognizes problems which are beyond capabilities and is learning from the experts in the area
- Performs work that involves the use of conventional engineering practices and standards
- Designs, supports and tests low to moderate complexity controls and automation systems and equipment. Ensures designs meet useability and supportability criteria
- Implements automated equipment design projects with industry best practices for machine safety, ergonomics, and efficiency/product yields
- Supports the manufacturing floor for any controls related questions and trains other members on use of controls technology
- Design and implementation of simple safety circuits and safety hardware
- Selects components and implements low to intermediate complexity data acquisition systems
- Creation of electrical and/or mechanical schematics and interpretation of 3d models
- Installation and checkout of automation solutions of medium complexity, with minimal guidance from senior engineers
- Navigates in SCADA environment, with little guidance. Understands SCADA security requirements and access management protocols. Implements pre determined alarm and monitoring capabilities
- Possibly guides/directs a Level 1 Engineer or technician
What We Are Looking For
- Basic engineering knowledge; basic understanding of component function and testing. Learning manufacturing and controls processes, tools, and standards
- Basic written/verbal communication skills and presentation skills; solid technical writing skills (procedures, reports, etc.)
- Solid problem solving & troubleshooting skills and analytical calculation skills
- Solid use of PCs and associated software
- Effective time management skills
- Ability to effectively operate in the project team environment and communicate with customers
- Follows technical direction and provides input
- Proficient use and understanding of design software/tools as appropriate
- Knowledge in some types of assembly, test and process control systems
- Basic knowledge of appropriate internal information management system (i.e. ERP, MRP, PLC and Document Storage system) applications
- Basic knowledge of vendors, manufacturing processes, and procurement methods
- Basic understanding of PLCs and automation. Implements system automation solutions
- Basic understanding of ladder logic, arrays, tags, and programming
- Basic understanding of SCADA
- Ability to program and deploy basic HMIs
- Basic understanding of communication protocol, EIP, OPC-UA, knowledge of relational and historical data basing, industrial networking and network interface, remote access and entry points
- Basic working knowledge of robotics, vision systems, linear actuators, servos, VFDs, motion control, motor control
- Basic understanding of safety circuits and safety hardware
- Basic working knowledge of data acquisition hardware and associated programming
- Ability to understand and create electrical schematics and 3D models
Education or Formal Training
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical/Engineering/Mechatronics or International equivalent required
- Basic Six Sigma tools knowledge required
Experience Required
- Greater than two years in related field or entry level Master of Science degree required
