QVC / HSN is seeking a highly technical, hands-on Senior SQL Server Database Engineer, with a strong focus on SQL Server technologies to support existing database implementations and lead/participate in the design and implementation of new data architecture in pursuit of security, reliability, availability, and performance. The learning opportunities are great, and the ideal candidate is someone who wants to continuously expand and share knowledge and expertise in SQL Server and Azure technologies and keep their skills current.

Your Impact

Our SQL Server team is responsible for over 500 SQL Server instances and over 2,000 databases, supporting some of our most critical enterprise and digital applications. They are also leading the charge to modernize, including analyzing and designing migration plans to the cloud. They have recently begun new implementations on Azure and are evaluating all the various migration paths of databases to the cloud.

 

As a Senior Database Engineer on this team, you will help manage all facets of the SQL Server database systems lifecycle. You will help identify database-related issues, determine root causes, and implement solutions. You will oversee the coordination of patching cycles and database upgrades. You will also help manage the Azure database environments.

You will also play an active technical role in the planning and implementation phases of new projects, including helping to design our Cloud strategies. As you develop expertise in our environments, you will mentor and train other team members within the DBA group and other teams within IT, offering guidance, authoring documentation, and sharing technical knowledge.

What You Will Do

  • Install, administer, support, configure, secure, monitor, and tune SQL Server infrastructure components, on-prem and in Azure (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS.)
  • Troubleshoot problems and document procedures to guide Root Cause Analysis and resolutions.
  • Provide production support as necessary, participating in a 24×7 on-call rotation with 8-10 other team members
  • Develop, implement, and maintain backup and recovery strategies
  • Participate in the team’s use of Agile/Scrum methodologies, including sprint planning, story creation, backlog grooming, daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Support the deployment of database/application upgrades and patches, and act as part of the Release Management process. Ensure the use of configuration management tools to prevent untested or undocumented configuration changes.
  • Participate in research around SQL Server and Azure technologies and make recommendations based on requirements. Anticipate potential problematic situations/risks and address them with effective responses.
  • Integrate enterprise-wide tools for automating, monitoring, and managing the current and future technology environments.
  • Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks and tune for peak performance.
  • Create, document, implement, and maintain database management strategies, policies, and procedures, including security, support, training, installation, and upgrade procedures.
  • Serve as technical lead on projects, ensuring effective communications with other teams and reporting on status.
  • Mentors team members within and outside the DBA Team, ensuring strong collaboration, cross-training, and strong business knowledge.
  • Champions personal development through learning new skills and critical business knowledge.

What You Bring

  • 8+ years of SQL Server Database Administration.
  • 8+ years of T-SQL.
  • 8+ years of Backup and Recovery.
  • 3-5 years Highly Available Performance Tuning and capacity planning.
  • SQL Server 2019/2016/2012/2008R2 Administration
  • Azure database experience with solid Fundamentals Knowledge
  • Scripting languages such as Powershell or Azure CLI for automation of database admin and deployment tasks
  • Deep Experience in Troubleshooting / Problem Solving Skills.
  • Configuration Management and Database Security experience
  • PCI / SOX audit experience would be a plus
  • Agile scrum experience
